Why You Should Want to Learn to Ride a Motorcycle

Riding a motorcycle is nothing like driving a car.  In fact, when learning to ride a motorcycle many people are overcome with a feeling immense freedom and the reality that there truly is nothing separating them from the world around them.

This feeling can’t truly be explained, but it is something that just about every new rider will experience at least once.  That’s just one reason why you may want to learn to ride a motorcycle, however.  Other reasons include (but are certainly not limited to):

  • Motorcycles are generally more fuel efficient than cars - Obviously this may not be the case if you are comparing a 1,000cc super-sport to a Toyota Prius, but 99% of the time a motorcycle is a much more fuel efficient way to get around.  A Kawasaki Ninja 500R enjoys upwards of of 45 mpg, and a Suzuki SV650 will routinely achieve 40 mpg.  That’s real-world mileage, not mileage achieved on a test circuit!
  • Motorcycles cost less to maintain, own, and operate than a car - Most people pay less than $1,000/year for motorcycle insurance (that’s including collision).  If you purchase a sensible first motorcycle, such as a Kawasaki Ninja 650R or Suzuki GS500, that number may be less than $500/year!  Not only that, but since there are less parts on a motorcycle that can break they cost significantly less to maintain.
  • Riding a motorcycle is an experience - Learning to properly operate a motorcycle can be an incredibly rewarding experience.  The sights, sounds, and feelings that come with riding are simply beyond comparison.
